Weekly Update 5/28/18

There are several events happening this week for both elementary and middle school students.  

On Tuesday there is an instrumental music concert for instrumental music students in grades 6th-8th grade in the Heroes Auditorium.  In addition their s an Academic Excellence Awards Assembly for students in 4th and 5th grade who have earned a 3.7 G.P.A. or higher at the events center at the Colorado State Fair Grounds

On Thursday, Heroes is hosting its first Semi Formal dinner and dance for 8th grade students and 7th grade students with a qualifying G.P.A. This event is from 6 to 8 p.m. and will feature DJ Palomar, nominated as Pueblo’s Best DJ as our special guest.

On Friday will be Elementary Field Day in the morning and the MS Field Day in the afternoon.  So send students with sunscreen!  

The following week on June 4th Elementary Awards assemblies will take place 

8:30-9:30 Kindergarten Graduation in the media center 
9:40- 10:40- 1st and 2nd Grade Awards
12:30- 2:30 3rd- 5th Grade Awards

We are asking for parent support on an important issue.  As you may know, hoodies are not part of D60 dress code and are not part of the Heroes dress code this year.  As a part of our school handbook next year, students will not be allowed to wear hoodies outdoors during school hours  if the temperature is above 70 degrees. Also, hoodies may not be work indoors including in the cafeteria and hallways.   We will start reminding students about this change in the next few days, especially as we monitor temperatures inside and outside.

Classes will resume for all Heroes students on Monday May 14th.  We look forward to seeing students return tomorrow.

Weekly Update 9/17/17

This Thursday, September 21st, Heroes Academy will have school pictures and also vision hearing screening. On that day, students may wear school uniforms or dress up for pictures.  A note has been sent home with your Heroes student for school pictures.  

We also want to remind parents that the early pick up of students is an interruption to learning for both your child and the other students as well.  Early pick up of students does count as a school absence in the same way that a tardy will.  Parents and guardians are asked to make sure that early departures meet the criteria of an excused absence.  Also, please do not ask for students to leave early in the last 20 minutes of school.  

Also, your child may not leave the school with anyone who is not on the enrollment card in the office.  Please make sure these are updated to reflect your intention.  We cannot update these cards by telephone.  They must be updated in person for your child’s safety.

All visitors to the school must sign in in the office and wear a visitor’s badge.  This includes anyone who walks on our track during school hours.  If you walk on our track during school, we are happy to sign you in at our reception desk.

Finally, in order to make our school as safe as possible, parents who are waiting for students to be dismissed should wait outside the building.  We are having difficulty getting our students through the main lobby of the school after school.

We had a great week last week with lots of activities:  all grades had their field day, the last of the field trips were taken, the Heroes Connect Community Mural was created, and students began cleaning out their lockers.  It has been an interesting school year with lots of changes and disruptions, but we began a new legacy of fighting for what we believe in is right for our community.  Thank you to all of you who stepped up to provide your assistance this week and throughout the year to do what is best for our students, staff, and school.

Here are the events for this week:

Mon, June 5

*9:00-11:00 8th Grade Continuation Ceremony at Centennial High School.  All attendees and students should be in their seats by 8:55 a.m.  8th grade students will receive report cards and this will be the last day for 8th graders.


Tues, June 6

*Last school day for students in kindergarten through 7th grade.  Students will receive report cards to take home.

*All lost and found items must be claimed by this date or they will be donated to a charity organization.


Dates to remember:

*Summer Lunch Program at Heroes Academy for all children June 12th through July 28th from 11:30-12:30 Monday through Friday.

*Heroes Summer Instructional Program by invitation only, July 24th through August 4th.  Please turn in the form your child may have received.

*The Heroes Office will be closed from June 14th through the second week of August.

I would like to wish everyone a safe holiday weekend and take a moment to reflect on the reason for Memorial Day, which is to remember those who have died in service for our country.  I thank all parents and guardians who have or are currently serving in our nation’s armed forces.

We had a great turnout for our 1st annual 5K Fun Run and Walk.  Thank you to Mrs. Reilly and Mr. Vertovec and all the teachers who helped support this great activity for our students.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms, grandmas, aunties, and others who are raising children right now!  

We would like to thank everyone who came out to our Spring Carnival.  I think this was one of the best yet.  Thank you to our only PTO volunteers, Vicki Lopez and Marie Tutterow, for your tireless effort and attitude to bring the carnival and fundraisers to us every year.  If you would like to help plan next year’s carnival, please call our office at 549-7410.

We will be meeting with middle school students in the auditorium at 8:15 to talk about troubling behaviors we are seeing from some of them.  Parents and Guardians:  Please talk to your children about behaviors appropriate for school.

The spring carnival will be held on Friday, May 12th from 5:00-8:00 p.m.  Tickets will go on sale starting tomorrow in the main office.  This week they are on sale at a cost of 5 for $1.00.  Prices increase the night of the carnival to 4 for $1.00.   We also need donations of 2-liter Pepsi products and store-bought baked goods for the games.  All of those may be brought to the office beginning tomorrow

We are hosting a Career Fair for our 4th -8th grade students on Wednesday May 10th from 8 am-12 noon. There will be approximately 30 careers represented in the gym in a fair-like fashion. We are looking for additional careers to be represented and would love to have you volunteer.


If you are interested in talking to students about your career, training and/or education in the field, please contact Hope Reilly at 549-7419.


The National Association of Letter Carriers will have a box for their Stamp Out Hunger canned food drive at our school this week. Please donate non-perishable food to be distributed to local homeless shelters.

*Pueblo Children’s Chorale will be visiting Heroes Academy at 2:30.  All elementary girls are invited to wear dresses, and boys are invited to wear a suit and tie to school.  We will be teaching students proper etiquette for a concert, so they should look and act their very best on that day.

*MyLife students will be on a field trip.  Mr. Pacheco and Mrs. Reilly will provide more information to the students involved.

Weekly Update, April 23, 2017

We are wrapping up our series of state testing and want to thank all the families who made sure their students were at school every day, all day. Students exhibited great effort, and we are sure their effort will be rewarded. We will be making up tests during the next few days for those who were absent.

Unfortunately, we did not meet our goal of 95% attendance for the month, as our average as of last Friday was only 89.39%. Students will, therefore, be required to wear uniforms for the remainder of the school year unless we have a spirit day.

We are excited to share that Heroes will remain open as a K-8 school! We will be appealing to the state Board of Education tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. to allow our school to move into the district’s innovation zone. You will hear more about this exciting venture at an upcoming parent meeting. Please look for the date to be announced soon. Thank you to our families and community for your support and encouragement as we fought for our school’s future!

Band students, please remember there is marching band practice after school every Monday andWednesday 3:45-5:30. Please bring a full water bottle and walking shoes!
