School Closure

posted Apr 9, 2019, 6:01 PM by Julie Shue

Good evening,
This is Principal Shue from Heroes K-8 Academy with an important message concerning our school.
Earlier this evening, the Pueblo City Schools Board of Education voted to close Heroes Academy at the end of this school year. As a result, school boundaries will be modified and district and school staff will begin working on a transition plan. This information will be shared on our website and you will be alerted with another voice message from me with more information in the coming days.
I want to reassure you that our focus will be on completing this school year strong with a focus on providing a quality educational program. This decision will not impact the day-to-day operations this school year.
Although we recognize that these decisions are very difficult, we are committed to supporting our school district and school as we work together to assist our students and families in the transition process.
Thank you.

Important Parent Community Meeting Monday April 1, 2019

posted Mar 28, 2019, 8:12 PM by Julie Shue

Good evening Heroes Families,

Following a special board meeting held earlier this afternoon, the Pueblo City Schools Board of Education learned of Superintendent Charlotte Macaluso’s recommendations to close Heroes K-8 and Minnequa Elementary Schools at the end of the school year. The recommendation was reached after a series of community stakeholder meetings that have been ongoing since January this year. No action was taken on the recommendation presented.

Mindful in making her recommendation, Macaluso said “We are facing the fact that we have aging buildings that are in need of costly repair and maintenance. We are combating significant declining enrollment that is exacerbated by online and charter schools. We are facing a mounting pressure by a misguided and flawed state accountability system that focuses primarily on test score performance and discounts other valuable leading indicators of improvement and fails to recognize a “holistic” picture of school quality. We are struggling to compensate our employees and retain teachers in the face of a severe teacher shortage. All this is compounded with the fact that our public schools are severely underfunded.”

The school board will now hold a meeting at our school at the date and time listed below.

- Monday, April 1, 2019
- Location: Heroes K-8 Academy Auditorium
- 6pm - 7:30pm

We invite you to attend this meeting as we move forward in light of this new development.

Opening School Weekly Message

posted Aug 19, 2018, 2:31 PM by Julie Shue

Good Afternoon Heroes Families, this is Mrs. Shue, Heroes school principal, with the school opening weekly update.
We hope everyone has had a restful summer break.  We are so looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!  All students in grade K-8 should arrive at 7:35 tomorrow and we will start school at 7:45 a.m.    Students should gather in the front courtyard area of our main building.  Kindergarten parents may drop off in the front of the school or in the designated kinder drop off area.  The Kindergarten drop off area has moved to a place with more room for dropping off.  Please do not park or leave cars in this area.   All other parents are asked to use the loop near Montezuma and the cemetery for drop off and pick up.  The staff parking lot is not a student pick up area, please use the designated areas only.
Parents are asked to say goodbye to students as their lines leave the courtyard.  We will be working hard this year to teach proper line etiquette and other school routines, teachers need to have the students’ full attention.
If you need to visit the office tomorrow, we will be staging a waiting area in the media center to avoid standing in lines. We will help adults in the most efficient way possible.
Our school day will end at 3:35 p.m. We are asking parents to meet their students outside in the main courtyard.  We have limited space indoors and need all of our exit areas clear at dismissal time for a safe dismissal.
Our new school days are Monday through Thursday with no school on Fridays.
This year students have an opportunity participate in the Boys and Girls Club after school program free of charge.  Enrollment packets are available in our office.  We need these back as soon as possible.  In addition, Boys and Girls Club plans to provide programming on Fridays and students will be able to attend for a very slight fee.  They are taking registrations starting on Monday.  Participants will be fed a meal after school, be given support with homework, and build friendships that can last a lifetime.  Applications are available in the office and students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade may join.
Parent information packets will come home with your child on Monday.  We need these returned as soon as possible. And it is critical that every family complete all of the paperwork in the folder.
Open House will take place on September 5th from 6pm to 7:30 p.m.  We invite parents and students to come to school to meet teachers and get a look around their child’s classroom.  We plan to show you the great work that students are doing and explain our new Wit and Wisdom Reading program as well as our new math curriculum.
As a reminder- ALL students in grades K-8 are starting at Heroes Academy on Monday.  School begins at 7:45a.m.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year.
This week:
8/20/18- First day of school 7:45 a.m.

2018-19 Student Start/End Times

posted Jun 28, 2018, 11:20 AM by Julie Shue   [ updated Jul 24, 2018, 9:04 AM by ]

Heroes Academy is pleased to share with you an update regarding our bell times for the upcoming school year which will begin on August 20th. We have worked with our administration to encourage an earlier release time considering the very young age of some of our students.

We are pleased to inform you that a decision was made to shift the bell schedule at our school to begin at 7:45 a.m. and end at 3:35 p.m. This new bell schedule will still meet the time requirements for all our students as set by the Colorado Department of Education.

We believe this decision was made truly in the best interest of the students at our school, and we appreciate the prompt attention shown from our administration.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to this message and I hope you are enjoying your summer!
